Some crazy exciting new features include automated tournaments as well as the Archon and Allied Commanders mode. Automated Tournaments are daily tournaments that allow you to square off against similarly-skilled opponents in cutthroat competitions for fame and glory. The Archon Mode allows you and a friend to share control over a single base, as opposed to classic 2v2 where you’re each in control of a separate army. For instance, one of you could focus on production while the other controls offensive units, which also allows for exciting coaching opportunities.
At the end of the day, Gears Tactics transitions the series into a new genre admirably well. Although there is much to be desired regarding mission variety and replayability, the developers did a great job interweaving classic Gears combat and weaponry into a tactical format, making for a positive experience over
In addition, several Protoss units are gaining abilities or having slight tweaks to their existing skillset. Tempests are gaining the Disintegration ability, which deals massive damage to single units either in the air or ground as well as structures, but their normal attack can no longer hit flying units. In addition, they’ve gained a buff to their movement speed. Disintegration does not require the Tempest to remain in proximity for the duration of the ability, and is a scary new target-removal option. Immortals have had their Hardened Shields removed (!) but gain the Barrier Shield ability, which grants a short-duration damage absorbing shield. This will reward intelligent use as well as improve encounters where the Immortal was formerly unstoppable.
For the stoic Terran, we have two new units: the Big Daddy-looking, drill-equipped Herc and single-target assassin the Cyclone. The Herc is trained from the Barracks, has the ability to launch itself toward a target and can be upgraded to deal area of effect damage in a small radius. It cannot target air. The Cyclone (pictured above), built from the Factory, can lock on to deal double damage while moving and can hit ground or air units. The Lock On upgrade must be researched at a Factory’s Tech Lab. It’s a quick unit with the same speed as a Stalker, and is Best gears Of war campaign used for kiting and single-target removal.
There are some small annoyances that start to become more apparent as Gears Tactics long campaign unfolds, such as some common camera quirks and stiffness, protagonist Gabe Diaz’s mind-numbing tendency to audibly re-read mission briefs after a squad wipe, and character quips repeating every other time a unit’s selected. However, those and other little nuisances pale in comparison to the game’s droning sense of pace. Encounters feel like they drag on for ages thanks to an an inability to speed up or skip to the end of enemy turns and friendly buff animations that take too long to complete, and the overarching story is an even worse offender. Its first act is really an extended 5-10 hour tutorial, characters are uninteresting and hard to get invested in, and the plot doesn’t exactly amaze six mainline entries
When it comes to tactical options on the battlefield, Gears Tactics is better than XCOM 2 . Both use the AP (action point) system. Soldiers basically have a set number of action points with which to perform actions. Moving a set distance, using a weapon, or activating a special ability typically cost one AP. Sometimes there are restrictions, like not being able to fire a heavy weapon after moving. Gears Tactics gives each soldier three APs, as opposed to XCOM ’s two. A lot is borrowed in Gears Tactics , but that’s not a bad thing by any stretch of the mind. Five classes, Support, Vanguard, Heavy, Scout, Sniper, provide a wealth of tactical options and synergy opportunities against a sometimes insurmountable foe, and it feels like XCOM with a few gritty Gears of War twists. Cover is the basis of the mainline series, and that’s equally true in this ambitious spinoff , with some added destructibility of certain weaker objects like boxes and sandbags. It may offer few innovations, but those that it does are thanks to is unique source material.
